Cultural Things to Do in Deal, Dover and Sandwich

It's no wonder that White Cliffs Country has a wonderful cultural scene. Our striking coastline, stunning countryside, quaint and quirky towns and picturesque villages have inspired artists, musicians and writers throughout the centuries. Do something different in 2021 and explore the culture of White Cliffs Country - a unique and vibrant destination where ancient meets modern and England meets Europe.

We have a fantastic selection of art galleries in White Cliffs Country. Seaward Gallery on Deal seafront exhibits paintings by Penny Bearman. Formerly a chapel, Linden Hall Studio has space over two floors for artists to exhibit their work. Opened in 2017 is Will and Yates, an art gallery and home store, with original paintings, ceramics and new decorative pieces. Many of the galleries here hold regular exhibitions including St Mary’s Art Centre in Sandwich, which hosts concerts and events. You'll see vivid evidence of artistic influence throughout White Cliffs Country - follow the ChalkUp21 Art and Architecture trail for fine examples of 21st Century art along the coastline of the Strait of Dover.

The performing arts scene is celebrated at the Astor Community Theatre in Deal - a unique, multi-purpose arts centre that offers an eclectic mix of music, theatre, literary events, art exhibitions and films, together with a variety of classes and clubs for all ages and tastes. In Sandwich, the Empire Cinema is a fabulous Art Deco picture house and classic movie screening nights are held in this original 1930s cinema, which pays tribute to the golden age of films.

White Cliffs Country has a great music scene, with live music a frequent and popular event in our traditional pubs and music festivals taking place throughout the year. Our independent and intimate music venues offer a fabulous way to experience live music. The Sandwich Festival takes place annually over three days with music, food and street stalls and is one of the most popular events in White Cliffs Country's cultural calendar - along with Deal's Festival of Music and the Arts, which showcases everything from street music to opera.

There's too much to squeeze into a short visit, so extend your stay here and choose from fabulous quality accommodation - which in many cases also embraces the culture of this unique destination. Make an escape from the everyday with a cultural staycation in White Cliffs Country.
