Joseph Sevier was born in New London, Connecticut in 1961 and he grew up around Washington D.C. and in Charlotte, North Carolina. At 18 he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the Southwest of the United States. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 1988 with a Bachelor of Fine Art, magna cum laude.

In 1989 Joseph moved to Sandwich, Kent, in England, where he is a full-time artist in his studio in a mediaeval walled garden.
