Western Heights Nature Reserve

The Western Heights has been made a Local Nature Reserve because the chalk grassland of the green slopes is important for wildlife, and they are protected within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and as a Scheduled Ancient Monument because of the national importance of the historic fortifications.

There are opportunities to access the fortifications - Western Heights, Drop Redoubt and The Grand Shaft at the annual Open Days and for other scheduled tours. See the Western Heights Preservation Society website for further details.

However, you may visit the Western Heights Local Nature Reserve at any time.

There are 3 clearly marked circular routes - follow each route separately or join them together for a longer walk of approx 4 miles.

  • Drop Redoubt Circular Walk approx 3/4 of a mile taking about 40 minutes.
  • Grand Shaft Circular Walk approx 3/4 of a mile taking about 40 minutes.
  • Citadel Circular Walk approx 2 miles taking 2 hours.

There are fine views over the English Channel, Dover Castle and the White Cliffs of Dover.

A great place to see chalk downland wildflowers and wildlife.

Access via South Military Road (A20 Western Heights roundabout) or via Cowgate steps along the North Downs.

Discover the history and wildlife of the site on three waymarked walking routes, contained in a free colour leaflet.
